The Midnite Follies Orchestra: Jungle Nights In Harlem. A tribute to Keith
Nichols.
Back in the mid-1970s pianist/singer and bandleader Keith Nichols formed the
Midnite Follies Orchestra to play his superb collection of transcriptions
and arrangements of hot jazz from the 1920s and 30s. The music of Duke
Ellington was prominent in the band's repertoire which also included fine
music by Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and other jazz
giants of the era.
Keith used many of the finest specialists in vintage jazz to bring the music
he loved to life, players such as John Barnes, Alan Elsdon, Dave Savill,
Laurie Chescoe, Pete Strange and Randy Colville. The youngest musician in
the line-up back at the start was trombonist Alistair Allan and now, nearly
fifty years after the band's founding, Alistair has reformed the band using
an array of talent all of whom had a long association with Keith who sadly
left us at the beginning of 2021. This evening's performance will be a
tribute to this superb musician and beloved colleague.
