JULIA TITUS presents MA BESSIE
Bessie Smith (Julia Titus) and her blues troupe (drummer Sam Kelly with Paul Jobson on keyboards, Tony Qunta on guitar and Richard Sadler on upright bass, Clare Hirst on sax/clarinet and Kevin Davy on trumpet) perform to a narrated show, featuring music from the era and showcasing many (approximately 22) of Bessie's songs. The production chronicles her life from a one-room shack in Blue Goose Hollow, through to becoming the highest-paid black entertainer of that time, to the tragic accident on Route 61 in September 1937 which resulted in her untimely death aged 43 years.
The run of shows started on 22nd September 2017 and has gained momentum throughout 2018. We are particularly focussing on, but not restricted to, Black History Month 2018 and there are plans for tours in Europe and The States. Confirmed showdates during the rest of the year include Wilde Theatre, South Hill Arts Centre in Bracknell, Uckfield Festival 2018, Bridgwater Arts, The Acorn in Penzance, Old Town Hall in Hemel Hempstead, a rebooking at The Hideaway in Streatham, Winchester Discover Centre, Newquay Lane Theatre, Marlow Jazz Club and many more throughout 2019.
